TECH DEMONS

Once my friends left and headed west, I winged my way out over the plains and began hunting for the orokh. I found the sprawling tribes sooner than expected. Their horde followed the coastline, and its current course would take them right by Ephram’s grove.

The two groups ended up passing each other, eyeing each other at a distance like two feral dogs meeting for the first time. They largely avoided each other, though I imagined that Morog might have recognized Macha at the very least.

I waited for the Fomori to continue on, then landed directly in the path of Morog’s column. I let their scouts see me and watched as they dutifully ran back to get Morog. They might identify me from the storytomes, or they might just see a single demon.

Either way, it was noteworthy enough to bring to their chieftain.

The orokh file slowed and began to mill around me as the main column parted to allow a single warrior through. I recognized Morog’s wild mane and his tusks. He’d added another layer of muscle since I’d last seen him and still carried an enormous root-club.

“Well met, old friend!” Morog called as he stalked forward and offered his hand in friendship.

I clasped his forearm, and we tested our strength for a moment, then released each other with a grin.

“Was that Macha we just passed?” Morog jerked a finger over his shoulder at the path the Fomori had taken. “If so, she has grown truly massive since I’ve last seen her. There was a time I could look her in the eye.”

“It was,” I confirmed. “They’re going to the Tree of Blood, now cleansed. Ephram will be guardian and Macha will protect him.”

“And you?”

“I told them I needed to go help you find your brothers in the Blasted Lands.” I folded my arms across my chest. I love having muscles. “Until that happens, I’m at your disposal. I want to make sure the orokh survive to cross into the Blasted Lands and then link up with Gronde and Brim. I’ve a feeling once you are properly introduced, the demon hordes will tremble at the sight of the orokh.”

Morog gave a raucous laugh and shook his head in disbelief. “Almost I could see such a thing, but the demons following us have brought strange weapons of iron and brimstone. They can kill from a distance, and our shamans see no spells to counter. More like sling stones, but fired at an incredible rate from a great distance.”

“Interesting.” I began slowly flapping my wings behind me. “I’d see these weapons for myself. Your people look tired. There is a grove not far ahead, where Ephram ruled. I’d camp in the shadow. Saghir will return there before dawn, and he can protect you if I do not return.”

“Where will you be?” Morog eyed me in confusion.

“I’m going to break the army following you,” I explained as if relating the weather. “Once they’ve been routed, then I’ll return and we’ll journey together to the Blasted Lands.
